The "Happy Peasant" Problem & Adaptation

Humans possess a remarkable ability to adapt to their circumstances (intrapsychic adaptation). Over time, individuals living in severe deprivation may adjust their expectations downwards, reporting relatively high life satisfaction. Conversely, wealthy individuals may adapt to luxury and report dissatisfaction.

If policy is driven solely by self-reported scores, it risks over-rewarding the privileged "frustrated achievers" while ignoring the objective suffering of resilient, deprived communities.

Cultural Variance

Different cultures attach different weights to positive and negative experiences. Western cultures tend to prioritise self-enhancement and positive affect, whereas Eastern cultures often prioritise social harmony and self-criticism, giving negative affect more weight in their subjective evaluations.

These cultural differences can skew international or cross-demographic comparisons if not properly calibrated.
